There was a pause on the call at that point; a moment of silence that we feared meant he was outraged at our suggestion that, for Halloween each year, we bring out such a horrible thing as a tradition. Just as we were about to explain that it was just a crazy thought…he interrupted, “a severed finger…or an ear would be better.” And the legend of Pearly Bow was born.
Of course, we said “Happy Halloween” but, as always, we said it in a way that is pure Ole Smoky. “Happy Hollerween” was celebrated across the country and a new (made up) legend was born from what everyone will believe is true southern folklore.
Who knows, perhaps one night around a campfire the story of Pearly Bow will be retold. Of course, a jar of Ole Smoky will no doubt fuel that fire.
